Commissioned by the City of Port Coquitlam for the new Port Coquitlam Community Centre, this project honours Terry Fox with a focus on his childhood and hometown roots.

Anabella Alfonzo* worked with the City of Port Coquitlam for one year, leading the foundational stages of the public art process. Beginning with the creation of a comprehensive public art plan to guide the commissioning, development, and delivery of the monument, Anabella collaborated with the City to issue a public call for artists, define the selection process, recommend panel members, and lead a two-stage artist selection—following public art best practices while aligning with the City’s values and procurement systems. The following year, Aartplace provided consulting services for the feasibility and procurement of the landscape architecture and integration scope, ensuring the artwork was seamlessly sited within the public realm.

Gateway of Giants, by Casto Solano, comprises two sculptures that evoke Terry Fox’s spirit growing up in Port Coquitlam: a life-size bronze of Terry as a child and a weathering-steel gateway featuring a cut-out silhouette of Terry poised at the start of a race. The gateway casts shifting light and shadow across the plaza, transforming throughout the day and seasons. Together, the two sculptures create an inviting public space for connection, celebration, and remembrance—encouraging visitors to approach, engage with the work, and pause for reflection. The installation invites residents and visitors alike to share Terry Fox’s legacy in the place where his journey began.
